En "Guastavinos" documento mis visitas a las construcciones de los grandes arquitectos de ascendencia valenciana, Rafael Guastavino II (Valencia, 1842 - Baltimore, 1908) y Rafael Guastavino III (Barcelona, 1872 - Nueva York, 1950). También se les conoce como Rafael Guastavino i Moreno, Guastavino padre, y Rafael Guastavino i Expósito, Guastavino hijo. Comparto aquí mis impresiones de mis visitas y también la historia de estos edificios que representan un trocito de Valencia y sus tradiciones arquitectónicos aquí en Estados Unidos.

En tierras canadienses / On Canadian Soil

Hace unos meses cumplí el sueño de pisar tierras canadienses por primera vez. Desde niño, me obsesioné con el país norteño. Su aprecio por la naturaleza y los panoramas naturales que atesora captaron mi fascinación infantil y juvenil. Siempre quise ir pero no se presentó la oportunidad de visitar el país que me tenía enamorado hasta que disfrutamos de la boda de unos amigos muy cercanos en Toronto. Durante ese mágico viaje tuvimos la suerte de poder apreciar, en una visita obligatoria, a una de las obras del Guastavino hijo, Rafael Guastavino Exposito, la estación central de trenes (Union Station). Construida entre 1914 y 1921, se aprecie mucho detalle en los techos y en seguida son reconocibles como arte guastavino. Se destacan las varias capas de azulejos. También, se nota enseguida que es otro "palacio para el pueblo". Un lugar de tránsito público es elevado a un nivel de gloria e importancia.

A few months ago, I fulfilled a dream of visiting Canadian soil for the first time. Since I was young, I was obsessed with the country to the north. Its appreciation for nature and its amazing natural scenery captivated me as a youth. I finally had the opportunity when we attended the wedding of our close friends in Toronto. It was a magical trip. We had the opportunity to visit Union Station, one of the works of Guastavino son, Rafael Guastavino Exposito. Built between 1914 and 1921, the ceiling is readily recognizable as Guastavino architecture. Up close, one can appreciate the great detail of the various layers of tile. Another work that is a testament to the Guastavino mantra of "Palaces for the People", as a place of public transit takes on a grandeur of its own.
